Innovative Biogas Conditioning: GraniteFuel Engineering’s Groundbreaking System at Mountain View Landfill for Fuel Cell Applications

Project Overview:

GraniteFuel Engineering designed and built a first of its kind biogas conditioning system which scrubs contaminants from landfill gas on-site to supply fuel cells with a clean, reliable fuel source. Located at the Mountain View Landfill in Mountain View California, the system is a first of its kind deploying a combination of polymer-based temperature swing adsorption (TSA) for siloxane/VOC abatement and deep chilling for emissions-less TSA system regeneration. GraniteFuel was trusted with the design and construction of the system due to the stringent maximum contaminant levels required by the highly sensitive fuel cells and GraniteFuel’s efficient systems’ design capabilities. Fuel cells are poised to play an increasing roll both in stationary and mobile power applications and GraniteFuel’s upgrading technology allows them to operate on RNG and biogas.

The Process:

The GraniteFuel system combines inorganic sulfur removal, dehydration, temperature swing adsorption siloxane/VOC removal, deep chilling TSA regeneration, organic sulfur removal and gas boosting. The entire Landfill biogas conditioning system was design by GraniteFuel engineers to occupy a minimal footprint as defined by site conditions. This included the design and construction of a platform to contain some of the required equipment.
