Optimizing Biogas Conversion: GFE’s Innovative Approach to Meeting Strict RNG Injection Standards

GraniteFuel Engineering’s (GFE) biogas conditioning equipment will convert dairy derived biogas into Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) to be injected into the local DTE pipeline. Injection tariffs require that the product gas comply with tough ppm level O₂ thresholds. GFE has delivered a system that uniquely integrates inhouse designed catalytic O₂ removal into the existing biogas upgrading process. The dairy farm will benefit from an integrated controls approach with both O₂ addition and subsequent O₂ removal. This strategy minimizes operating costs while maintaining a stringent pipeline quality injection requirement saving the client hundreds of thousands per year.

The GFE system combines: H₂S Removal, Gas Boosting, O₂ Removal (Heater, Guard Bed, Catalyst Bed), Dehydration, Compression, Membrane CO₂ Separation & Sales Gas Compression. Oxygen is injected into the system to suppress H₂S formation and maximize the capacity of the H₂S media. Concentrations are controlled in order to work in conjunction with subsequent downstream catalytic O₂ removal. The order of operations are set-up uniquely in order to avoid duplication of function. The result is efficient low-cost operation of an RNG system that will support injection into pipelines with stringent O₂ thresholds.
